Mary, Undoer of Knots
After I broke up with my boyfriend I still felt tied to him. This really scared me, because I saw him as mildly abusive to me. I would have nightmares of him breaking into my house and struggling me and other things. After a few months I blocked him on all social media and even his phone number. But I still felt tied to him. My sister, who is also interested in Catholicism, told me about a novena to Saint Rita of Cascia. Saint Rita is the patron saint of abuse victims among other things. I felt better after doing the novena, but I still felt tied. Then I found a novena to Mary the Undoer of Knots. I was already praying a daily rosary, so I thought why not try it. I did the novena and I felt so much better when I was done with it. This poses a question, who is Mary the Under of Knots?
Mary the Undoes of Knots is the same Mary that we read about in the Nativity Story that gave birth to Jesus. This is one of the many titles that the Catholic Church has given to Mary. So what is the theology of the title Undoer of Knots?
Theology
I heard a story about Mary the Undoer of Knots once. In the story a Polish couple is having marriage problems. The man took the knotted ribbon that was the symbol of their marriage to the local priest. As they prayed for Mary's intercession the man started to untie the ribbon. When the ribbon was unknotted it was a clean and perfect white ribbon. This story might be the reason why there is a sanctuary in the Cancun Jungle. The sanctuary is called Sacred Sanctuary of Mary Untier of Knots. Here is a picture of the sanctuary.
Here is a picture of the statue of Mary at the Sacred Sanctuary of Mary Untier of Knots. The statute can be found in the Cancun Jungle. The Santuario de María Desatadora de Nudos (Sanctuary of Mary Undoer of Knots) in Cancun is a serene, open-air spiritual site located in the Southern Polygon jungle, offering a unique, peaceful retreat for reflection and prayer. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary who unties the "knots" (problems) of life, visitors often tie ribbons representing their struggles, and return with colored ribbons when their prayers are answered.
But the main theology of the title comes from Saint Irenaeus (Bishop of Lyon and martyred in 202). Saint Irenaeus noticed a parallel that was made by Saint Paul between Adam and Christ. Saint Irenaeus then saw a similar parallel between Eve and Mary.
For my “where in the Bible does it say?” people. Saint Irenaeus was looking at three different Bible passages. I will share all three of the passages with you.
“So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven.” 1 Corinthians 15:45-47 (NIV)
“Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—
To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!
Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 5:12-21 (NIV)
“It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. But there is a place where someone has testified:
“What is mankind that you are mindful of them,
a son of man that you care for him?
You made them a little lower than the angels;
you crowned them with glory and honor
and put everything under their feet.”In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.” Hebrews 2:5-9 (NIV)
So Saint Irenaeus figured that if Jesus is the New Adam then Mary must be the New Eve. This lead him to write the following:
“Eve, by her disobedience, tied the knot of disgrace for the human race; whereas Mary, by her obedience, undid it.” -Saint Irenaeus
Closing Thoughts
The other things that I want to say is that I don’t think my ex-boyfriend would have hurt me. But the fear was there whenever he touched me. The relationship is over and I am safe. I keep him in my prayers, almost daily.
As I said before praying the novena to make feel better. For those who don’t know what a novena is, I will explain now. A novena is nine days of praying for something. Then on the tenth day something is suppose to happen. On the tenth day of my novena I started to feel better about the relationship. So I happily pray for him when he comes to my mind.
If you want to learn more about the novena you can go to theholyrosary.org. The site talks about the theology and has the pray. If you would like to look at it. I am also not affiliated with the site.
