A Journey Toward the Ancient Fold
Hi, I’m Abigail Harmon.
I grew up in the Protestant tradition (the Church of the Nazarene), where I first learned to love the Scriptures and the person of Jesus Christ. However, recently, I started to feel stale in my faith. This pulled toward the "roots" of the tree. I started asking questions that only history could answer: How did the early Church worship? What did the martyrs believe? Why does the Church feel so divided today? What’s the deal with Mary?
This curiosity led me on a journey of deep research into the Catholic faith. This curiosity lead me to think that the different denominations were not so different. So I started a blog to give myself an excuse to write papers on what I have learned about the Catholic Church. As I think about and pray about joining the Catholic Church.
Why "Ut Unum Sint"? The name of this project comes from the Latin text of John 17:21, where Jesus prays for His disciples: Ut unum sint—"That they may be one."
As I navigate my own transition, I find myself standing in a unique middle ground. I have a deep love for my Protestant roots, a future in the Catholic Church, and a profound respect for the Eastern Orthodox tradition (largely thanks to a dear friend who keeps me grounded in the beauty of the East).
Ut unum sint has been the prayer of my heart for the past few months. I want to try to build a bridge of understanding for us. For more information about the Latin please, read Why Latin? Why Unity?
What You’ll Find Here I created The Ut Unum Sint Project because I believe that the "gap" between our denominations is often bridged best through friendship, shared history, and honest theological reflection. Here, we dive into:
Theology & Tradition: Exploring the Church Fathers and the development of doctrine.
Heroes of the Faith: Celebrating Saint feast days and the rhythms of the liturgical year. While looking at anyone who is a hero of the faith
Unity: Discussing how we can move closer to one another without compromising the truth.
I don’t claim to have all the answers for what a united Church looks like. I only know that Christ prayed for it, and I want to spend my time working toward it. Whether you are Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, or just curious—you have a seat at this table.
It is also just me working on this blog. I am also an Amazon Affiliate, so I might get paid for any links you click on.
